Bell Ropes

All Ropes are handmade on our ropewalk

All of our ropes are hand made to order on our rope walk located at the heart of the Somerset Levels. Please find below information on the different types of materials we offer.

Flax Bell Ropes

Flax has become the most widely used natural fibre for Church bell ropes. Flax

is widely available at a reasonable price but the quality can vary depending

on a wet or dry harvest. Flax is hard wearing and soft to handle. It is liable to

absorb moisture and stiffens in damp or humid conditions. Longer ropes can

change in length as a result of wet & dry weather.

Hemp Bell Ropes

Hemp is the traditional material for bell ropes. It is a superior quality natural

fibre rope, giving greater strength and abrasion qualities. Hemp is not as

readily available as flax and is therefore more expensive. Hemp rope may seem

a little hard on the hands initially, but softens with use. Hemp is also liable to

absorb moisture and stiffens in damp or humid conditions. Longer ropes can

change in length as a result of wet & dry weather.

Man Made Materials

Pre Stretched Polyester (PSP)

This is widely used for the top ends of bell ropes and can be spliced by hand

or on a rope walk (often called a machine splice). It is low stretch and has hard

wearing qualities. PSP does not absorb much moisture and is not affected by

weather conditions. We advise that all ropes over 40ft use PSP as a top end.

Dyneema

This is a new entry into the bell rope market. Dyneema braided rope has a very

strong, polyethylene core shrouded with a polyester sheave. The ultra-low

stretch and hard wearing properties of Dyneema rope, make it an ideal choice

for heavy bells or long drafts.

Our standard sally diameter is 1 3/4 Inches. If a different diameter is required this must be stated at point of order.

Our rope diameters and tail end lengths are calculated using the wheel diameters

of each individual bell. If a specific tail end length is required, this must be stated at point of order.

Measuring a rope

To provide a rope quotation, we will need:

- Overall length of rope (complete top end, sally and untucked tail end).

- Sally colours (up to three).

- Which bell the rope is for if not ordering a full set.

  1. -Which materials you require (hemp/flax/PSP/Dyneema).
